More trouble in Europe for Merkel
However, the tables were turned on Saturday night when David Cameron and Ms Merkel watched Chelsea beat Bayern Munich on penalties in the Champions League Final.
Unlike their low-key viewing of the World Cup match in 2010, the two politicians were also joined by the leader of the free world and other heads of state at the G8 meeting at Camp David near Washington.
Mr Cameron said it was an “extraordinary experience” to see England emerge triumphant from an England-Germany penalty shoot-out.
He said that a number of the leaders were working in another room when the penalties were about to start. His expectations were so low that he had to be coaxed into watching them.
“Angela said that the penalty shoot-out has started, I must go and watch it. President Obama turned to me and said ‘Are you going to go?’
And I said ‘Well, what's the point? We never win’,” said Mr Cameron.
Although the rivalry was good natured, there was reportedly some tension in the room. Ms Merkel’s foreign policy advisor Christoph Heusgen (seated in front of Mr Cameron) is an avid Bayern fan.
According to reports, a member of the German delegation shouted “scheisse” when a penalty was missed. President Obama was said to have joked that “no translation was needed” following the remark.
Also present were Jose Manuel Barossa, the President of the European Commission, and Francois Hollande, the new President of France.
